Methodology

The initial plan for the group distinguished five phases, which have broadly been adhered to. Following the conceptual development phase up to October 2003, the following year was dominated by

Phase 2-Grounding and Piloting: October 2003-April 2004
Phase 3-Main Fieldwork:April 2004-October 2005

Six basic components of the research have been identified:

RANQ - Resources and Needs Questionnaire -

QoL - WeD Quality of Life surveys

Community Profiles - Urban and Rural

Income and Expenditure Surveys

Process Research

Big Structures

By December 2004, the group had completed the implementation of the initial community profiling, and had grounded, piloted and implemented the Resources and Needs Questionnaire (RANQ) in all the rural communities. The RANQ gathers information on an extremely broad range of individual and household resources, including social and cultural resources. By using the same coding systems and verification procedures it will permit comparative analysis across sites and countries. WeD has also completed phase one of a three-phase development of its Quality of Life (QoL) approach. Phase 1 of the QoL has gathered information about what constitutes quality of life directly from the country sites, one of the first attempts to do this.
